This particular 60 is like the famous Batman villain, Harvey Dent, AKA Two Face. It’s got a lot of pristine features, but with an ugly side. Really that’s just an attention getter, but here is what I mean. There is a thing with some 60s, primarily from the West Coast, that develop rust along the rain gutter all of the way around the top. It’s to do with failing seam sealer, that lets water get in the various folded metal seams that make up the roof construction. The water rusts the roof out to the point that it’s really not fixable without replacing the whole roof. This is one of those 60s. However, and in this case that’s a big however, some of those roof rust 60s don’t have rust issues elsewhere. This one is one of those. There are really no other rust issues elsewhere on the vehicle. Even the frame rust and quarter panel rust that is very common on most 60s is absent from this one.
We’ve restored hundreds of these vehicles and I can tell you that I’d rather deal with roof rust (alone) that with the other lower body panel rust that’s common on 60 series Land Cruisers. The hours of metal work, body work, and associated body labor required to replace the bottoms of all 4 doors, parts of the rockers, wheel well arches, and quarter panels far exceed even an entire roof replacement. (which is pretty much all that this one needs) So It’s not that bad.
We didn’t do any cosmetic work on this FJ60 but it came to us a few years ago for a Cummins R2.8 engine conversion. It had been previously converted to a TBI 350 and the antiquated gas engine was becoming problematic. The owner had us swap in a new crate Cummins turbo diesel using the existing NV4500 5 speed transmission. I’ts an awesome swap, done properly, and the rig runs and drives great.
The price of this Land Cruiser reflects the work that’s needed. It’s actually a dang good deal for someone who is willing to perform a roof replacement, or pay someone to do one. (about $16K here)
