looks like you guys have a ton of experience with the 60’s….. looking to purchase one and would like to get an idea of what costs are associated with making a swap to the small or large gas engine and stage 2 or 3 rebuild. Also, with sound deadening, 2.5″ old man emu suspension and the engine swap…. I would love some insight on the expectations on handling, noise, drivability etc. would love to chat

Hi, Just left a voice message for you too. I’m considering buying a 1990 FJ62 from a friend who’s owned it for 20 years. Body, frame and interior in very good shape. I’d probably leave as-is and concentrate on drive train upgrades. The original engine has 300,000 on it and runs reasonably well but currently needs a new head gasket. Owner has had trans rebuilt, plus upgraded exhaust and brakes. Would like to discuss costs to 1) rebuild existing engine; 2) replace engine w/ new 5.3 GM; 3) replace engine w/ new 5.3 and manual trans – I prefer a stick shift. Some guages don’t work well. Electric windows, door locks and HVAC need some work too. Would like a moderate suspension upgrade – I hunt, fish, camp and do general boon-docking but do not do extreme off-roading. Ultimately would like large roof rack, rear spare tire and jerry can racks. Wife would prefer I buy a later model 4×4 – so not to be a “money pit”! But I kinda like the F J. Can you help w cost estimates for budgeting purposes? Thanks!
